Euthanasia, of course is very complex issue which has a kaleidoscope of ethical, religious, medical and legal dimensions to it. Many disturbing questions germinate from this idea. First of all it has many moral and ethical qualms attached to it. How can the law and society allow a physician to take someone’s life, would not it be considered homicide? And even if a person decides to take his own life then what will be the effect of this legitimized suicide on society. But there is also flipside to it, would it be sensible to prolong a person’s agony when the hope of survival is already lost. Well, the pros and cons are certainly not easy to quantify so let’s make an effort to let people voice their opinion about it.

The issue has always been volatile and controversial so it keeps sprouting up in the news because of its radical nature. The whole world has been quite vocal about it. Countries like Netherland and Belgium have legalized it and there are places where the debate is still going. If the child does not start talking even though he/she has reached the appropriate age, is anti-social or behaves unusually, or is unable to communicate effectively, parents should suspect autism and consult their doctor.

An autistic child may react to ‘normal’ sounds in a special way. For example they may cover their ears or start crying at the sound of fireworks. The sounds that are classified as normal by the average person can be disturbing for children suffering from autism. Likewise, they can start feeling uncomfortable at a gentle touch or show of affection from others. They are unable to relate to these feelings as others do. If a child is trying to be friendly with them and smiles, a kid with autism may face trouble in connecting the smile to their happy feelings.

An autistic child may also have trouble reading and writing and thus may not e able to go to a regular school.  Autistic children are not able to pronounce some words properly because the sound of that word may not be clear to him

The repetitive behavior found amongst these children affects almost every part of their lives. For example, they are not too keen on deviating from their daily routine, for they like to follow a fixed schedule. They may also enjoy playing with a few specific toys, and may find the addition of a new toy to their collection quite upsetting. They might also insist that their things are arranged in one specific order and do not appreciate change.

Many readers may be wondering what causes autism. The fact is that though autism affects one child out of 150 no one really knows the exact cause of the illness. Autism has a strong genetic basis, though it is not clear whether it is due more to multi-gene interactions or rare mutations with major affects.

The human brains consist of billions of nerve cells that carry messages to other neurons in the brain and the rest of the body. But unfortunately, some of these cells especially those responsible for good communication, sense and emotions just do not develop fully or may be damaged in autistic child. The world is still trying to discover the real cause of this disorder.

As mentioned earlier there is to date no cure for autism, but therapists, specially trained staff and doctors can help a child overcome some of the difficulties he faces. The earlier the treatment is started, after noticing the symptoms, the better it is. And more chances there are for the treatment to succeed.

The first step of the treatment includes improving the child’s communication skills so he can, to some extent, express his feelings in terms of sorrow, joy and excitement. Some of them are unable to learn spoken languages very well, so they understand things through pictures or eve sign language. This makes learning easier for them.

Therapists also help these children practice social skills for instance, how to greet and meet people, stand in a line and wait for their turn, follow directions, etc. Some of those suffering from autism may have a problem with their temper so they need therapy to learn anger management, as they are known to have a tendency to throw tantrums that are difficult to deal with. Some even need medication to help keep their behavior and moods in check; however, no amount of therapy will lead to a full cure.

These are special schools to deal with these children because for the most part, they cannot join normal children in regular institutes. Children with a milder form of autism may however, be able to attain regular schooling. A Supportive family and teachers are very important in their lives. Staying calm and tolerant in their presence is also vital.

Children with a serious form of autism are usually unable to live independently; they require somebody’s help to get through their day, needing help with changing clothes, brushing their teeth, eating, etc.

It is important that parents are alert about their infant’s early development. If they notice any of these symptoms in their child, it is vital to consult the doctor as soon as possible and start treatment, as well as providing the child constant support so that he develops a sense of security.
