Andrew Strauss sees a potentially hard four match series
England captain Andrew Strauss admits there is still a room for improvement against Pakistan they will need if they are to set off for Australia with self-confidence. Andrew Strauss sees a potentially hard four match series against Salman Butt’s tourists as an opportunity to continue a sequence which began with last summer’s wins over West Indies and then in the Ashes. Anything but one more success, over a emergent team who have just drawn 1-1 against Australia themselves, would be a considerably inconvenient dent to England hopes of retaining the urn Down Under for the first time in almost a quarter of a century. England recent Test assignment was victory over Bangladesh and then they have been involved in One day International series before a mid summer recess. We are not necessarily where we want to be, but I think we are making improvements. My first series as captain we lost to the West Indies, then beat the West Indies and won the Ashes. I think there is a nice progression there but there are still few areas where we need to get better, no doubt about that. This Test series gives us a chance to do that. There are more pressing issues for Andrew Strauss and his side, though starting with how to defy a Pakistani bowling attack which saw off Australia for only 88 in accommodating conditions in the first innings at Headingley last week. This is the ground where generally the ball swings around a bit and it is imperative to react better against lethal Pakistan attack, they are good varied bowling attack, but our job is to over hype the opposition. Most Test teams you play against have got a good bowling attack, and Pakistan is one of the better ones and having high quality attack. Let’s hope for the best this one is lively in a good way, rather than a bad way. I don’t think either side want to be caught up in anything particularly controversial and let’s hope that the case.
