Massive oil plumes found in US Gulf Coast
Huge underwater plumes of oil in the Gulf of Mexico found by scientists, approximately 10 miles long and a mile wide due to last month’s rig disaster. This spill is considered to be the worst environmental disaster in US history. A Georgia university science professor said, it could take possibly decades to recover this quantity of oil and gas. We’ve never seen anything like this before and it is impossible to figure out the impact. Researchers from the National Institute for Undersea Science and Technology say they have discovered myriad wide ranging oil slicks lurking just beneath the surface of the sea and at depths of 4,000ft (1,200m). Many experts say the oxygen reduction is likely to continue, jeopardizing sea life and increasing the prospect of underwater dead zones. An estimates oil flow rate is 5,000 barrels per day, and that figures doubts some scientists. On Saturday, the Obama administration insisted immediate clarification from BP over its commitment to pay damages for the spill. The spill is threatening to eclipse the 1989 Exxon Valdez leak off Alaska as America’s worst environmental disaster.
